Custom features & highlights on product card

Overview:

These settings allow you to enrich your product cards with additional visual or informative content by connecting metafields or metaobjects. You can use these to display product-specific features (like "Handmade", "Vegan", etc.) or highlights (such as "Best Seller", "Limited Stock", etc.).

Note: These options require that you first configure the appropriate metafields or metaobjects in your Shopify admin.

Show custom features

Toggle this setting on to display a list of product-specific features on each product card in the featured collection.

The features are pulled from a product-level metafield or metaobject.

Typically used to highlight physical or technical attributes of a product.

Examples: “100% Organic Cotton”

Show custom highlights

Toggle this setting on to display a list of product highlights—typically key selling points or promotional messages.

Content is sourced from a metafield or metaobject at the product level.

Highlights can be used to communicate urgency, popularity, or benefits.

Examples: "Only 5 left", “New Arrival”.

Step 1: Create a Metaobject Definition for Product Highlights

A metaobject allows you to define reusable structured content, such as image-and-text highlight blocks, and link them to products

✅ To create the metaobject:

In your Shopify Admin, go to

Settings → Custom data → Metaobjects

Click “Add definition”

Fill in the details:

Name: Product highlights

Type (automatically set): product_highlights

Under Fields, click “Add field” and configure the following:

Field 1:

Name: Image

Type: Image (File)

Accepts: One image file

Field 2:

Name: Heading

Type: Single line text

Accepts: One line of text

(Optional) In Metaobject options, you may enable:

Publish entries as web pages (if highlights should be visible on a dedicated page)

Active-draft status (to control which entries are published)

Click Save to create the metaobject.

Step 2: Add Entries to the Product Highlights Metaobject

Once your metaobject is created, add entries that represent the individual highlight items.

✅ To add entries:

From the Metaobjects screen, click on your Product highlights definition.

Click “Add entry”.

Fill in the fields:

Image: Upload the icon or visual for the highlight (e.g., leaf icon for "Organic").

Heading: Enter the text (e.g., "Sustainably Made", "Limited Edition").

Click Save.

Repeat the process to add as many highlight entries as needed.

To connect highlights to specific products, you’ll need to create a metafield that references the metaobject entries.

✅ To create the metafield:

In Shopify Admin, go to

Settings → Custom data → Products

Click “Add definition”

Fill in:

Name: Product highlights

Namespace and key: custom.product_highlights (or similar)

Description: Optional, for internal use

Under Content type, choose:

Reference → Metaobject

Metaobject type: Product highlights

Accepts: List of entries (if you want to allow multiple highlights per product)

Click Save

Step 4: Assign Highlights to Products

Now that everything is set up, assign highlight entries to each product.

✅ To assign:

Go to Products in your Shopify admin.

Click on a product to edit.

Scroll to the Metafields section (at the bottom).

In the Product highlights field, click “Select entries”

Choose one or more entries from the Product Highlights metaobject.

Save the product.

Step 5: Enable "Show Custom Highlights" in Theme Editor

Finally, activate the feature in your theme.

✅ To enable in theme:

Go to Online Store → Themes → Click Customize

Navigate to the section where product highlights are supported (e.g., Featured Collection)

Toggle “Show custom highlights” to On

Save your theme settings

Once enabled, the product highlights will appear on product cards, using the image and heading data from the connected metaobject entries.
